So many people around the world each giving a little through their democratic governments to make human space exploration possible. While there are studies that show we gain more economically from our space program than what we have spent on it, it is still something we should do even if that was not the case. I grew up in a poor community, the son of two undocumented migrants. I remember feeling guilty about putting more than a lice of meat or cheese on a sandwich. Still, my family found ways to squirrel away money to travel sometimes and leave our city behind. As hard as my parents sacrificed for this humble trips, they understood that we must set a little so that even if it is once a year we can leave what we know behind and go somewhere else. Being an astronaugt is the earliest aspiration I can remember. I advocate for some of the poorest communities. Still, I am proud to live in a nation that has set aside resources and has contributed so much to focusing some of our brightest minds to reach out to the heavens and take a glimpse at the universe beyond our world. They lift us all up. To all of us here who work so hard for a better world, I wish you and yours a very happy New Year. = )
