So many people post that they dont get it or think the ALS ice - TopicsExpress

So many people post that they dont get it or think the ALS ice bucket challenge doesnt do anything or is stupid. Today, my students read an article on ALS in which they learned about the disease, watched an ESPN video on Pete Frates, read another article on the ice bucket challenge and how much money and awareness it has actually raised ($4 million as of two weeks ago), and then read Lou Gehrigs speech from two weeks after he was diagnosed. We analyzed the articles and the speech. We talked about a lot of things, including how to effectively raise awareness for causes that are close to them (including Michelle Plata Oesterles story and how she is changing the world), how their attitudes would change if they were diagnosed with a disease with a fatality rate of 100% (ALSs fatality rate), and what they can do to help others. They learned a lot about the disease and the challenge, including the reason for ice water (simulates briefly what it is like to have this disease). I also showed them the videos of their teacher accepting the challenge. I had 75 highly interested students reading articles above their lexile levels and discussing things that really matter. Id call this a fine day in teaching. Id also say this challenge is not stupid and has raised awareness and the education of at least 75 teens.
