So much to think about, I think. This show was cancelled, though - TopicsExpress

So much to think about, I think. This show was cancelled, though I know very little about what transpired to bring that about. (This is some of what I think.) As someone who made a comedy show about this topic I can say these few things: my title is a lot longer. But its also intentionally provocative (accompanied by a similarly confronting photo). I think/hope that it inherently asks of the reader or potential audience member that they take a little time with their initial reaction to it - and that, if after that, they think the show is a horrible idea that could upset or traumatize them they then choose of their own accord not to see it; that sometimes you get protested by groups that you imagined would be your allies (and might well be if they were able to see the show as programmed); that folks of all stripes have very strong initial reactions to titles and headlines but dont always endeavor to see the work beyond that challenging feeling; that although I have taken great pains to make a funny, edgy, and I think responsible and thought provoking show about this topic, and that who writes and delivers the material does often inform its intent and reception, I am constantly asked by organizers of other nights what kind of material I will be doing precisely because they have had forewarning about my show material - meanwhile, many other comics freely pepper their spots, without warning with material on the same topic (whether or not its funny or responsible would be subjective) without pre-censorship and I find that mind-bogglingly ironic; censorship in the arts, and particularly by arts organizations does little good in the complicated world of ideas; if indeed this show was created by rape survivors it must be excruciating to have been silenced on the matter; not everyone who sees my show likes it. In conclusion, my title is not as long as this post, I can promise you that, and my show will be at the Sydney Festival in January, I can promise you that too. Please come along. Or protest it. Either is a valid response by my measure, but I reckon Id breathe fire if someone tried to get it cancelled.
