So my recent essay about writing letters to our children got me thinking about posthumous parenthood--the important relationship we have with our parents even after theyre gone. Some of them are fueled by the kinds of letters I wrote about. Some of it is the way we carry our parents around in our heads in certain circumstances. I have very specific moments when I sort of inhabit the uniform of my parents. I dont mean while Im dealing with my kids necessarily-- everyone has that I cant believe I sound like my mother moment when dealing with kids. What Im talking about is different: engaging in certain behavior or thinking in a certain way that is derived from our parents and that sort of represents a continuation of the relationship.
