So proud of Amy D! Softball Earns NFCA Academic Honors Four members of the UAB softball team earned NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors The UAB softball team was named an NFCA All-Academic team with a 3.04 grade point average. Oct. 2, 2014 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Four members of the UAB softball team were named All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for the 2013-14 season. In addition to the individual honors, the Blazers were named an NFCA All-Academic team. “I am proud of these ladies for being excellent in the classroom,” said head coach Marla Townsend. “Our student-athletes understand the importance of being a student first and making academics a priority. Amy Dennis, Joanna Fallen, Kelly Britt and Lannah Campbell are great representatives of our softball family.” Dennis posted a grade point average of 3.9 last year to lead UAB. She appeared in all 59 games as a junior and started all but two. Dennis launched the Blazers’ first and only grand slam of the season in a 21-2 win at Jacksonville State on March 18. She totaled 28 hits, three home runs and 17 RBI on the year. Dennis was named UAB’s Student Athlete of the Week on April 16 and was named to the Conference USA Commissioners Honor Roll. Fallen finished the 2013-14 academic year with a 3.769 GPA. As a freshman, she saw action in 45 games and drew five starts during the 2014 season. Fallen notched the first home run of her career in a pinch hit at-bat in the Blazers’ 21-2 win at Jacksonville State and had a career day against Chattanooga in the NCAA Athens Regional, finishing with three RBI, a home run and a double to help UAB advance on to an elimination game against host Georgia. She was named to the C-USA Commissioners Honor Roll and earned the leagues Academic Medal. Britt earned a GPA of 3.766. She was sidelined with an injury in the Blazers’ season-opener on Feb. 6 against South Alabama and was granted a medical redshirt for the 2014 season. As a freshman in 2013, Britt saw action in 47 games, primarily as a pinch runner. She was selected to the C-USA Commissioners Honor Roll. Campbell recorded a GPA of 3.714 in her senior year at UAB. She is now a student manager for the Blazers after playing four seasons for Townsend. Last year, Campbell posted a record of 13-9 from the circle. She struck out 160 batters in 179.1 innings of work and made 27 starts, throwing 14 complete games. As a team, UAB posted a 3.04 GPA in 2013-14. Nineteen schools in Division I posted a 3.5 or higher GPA, led by the University of Nebraska at Omhaha with a 3.670. The Blazers were one of five C-USA teams to earn the honor, as Louisiana Tech posted the highest GPA of all C-USA schools with a 3.24. NCAA Division IIs Adelphi University registered a 3.724 GPA to pace all colleges in the NCAA. 4,660 softball players across seven membership divisions earned NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2013-14 academic year. NCAA Division I, with 1,096 honorees, had the most student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA or higher. In all, 408 different schools scored academic honors.
