So sickened by this hate crime. A group of 12 drunk - TopicsExpress

So sickened by this hate crime. A group of 12 drunk twenty-somethings (mostly women) see a gay couple walking down the street, ask if they are gay, then beat them up (punching and kicking them resulting in the hospitalization of both victims) plus the perpetrators stole one of the victims phone and credit cards. Years ago, when I was a closeted young American and heard about Matthew Shepard, I thought that hate crimes legislation made no sense because the act in question is already a crime. In this Philly case its aggravated assault. So you must ask yourself, what was the aggravating incident? What resulted in a heated escalation? The presence of a gay person? Does my existence aggravate people adequately enough for a brawl ensue? It is difficult to explain to my hetero family and friends that relocating to a city that is gay-friendly is very important to me. So is relocating to a state with gay-friendly laws in regards to marriage, hate crimes protections, and employment protections. In most states (36, if I an correct), it is perfectly legal to be fired by an employer for nothing more than being a gay man. That is the case in my home state, and the state in which I am a property owner. This is all why my job-hunt is focused on NYC, DC, and Chicago. -- msnbc/msnbc/pennsylvania-has-bad-hate-crime-laws-good-internet-sleuths
