So...some of you might be thinking...WHY are there so many refugees in East-Sudan? Why dont they just stay in their country- and thats a valid question to ask! Well, you see- things are really complicated in my country...Eritrea. It might have something to do with the fact that National service conscription is compulsory and frequently extended indefinitely. Military training for children remains compulsory. Conscripts are used as forced labour. Thousands of prisoners of conscience and political prisoners continue to be arbitrarily detained in appalling conditions. Torture and other ill-treatment are common. No opposition parties, independent media or civil society organizations are permitted. Eritreans continue to desperately flee their country in large numbers. A “shoot to kill” policy remains in place for those caught attempting to cross into neighboring countries. And...after alllllll that, for the lucky ones who make it out to one of the neighboring countries, for example to the the refugee camps in East-Sudan, they have to battle for their survival due to the scarcity of resources, and acute destitution. This is how things have been for over 4 decades. Generations living in limbo- not knowing if a political resolution will appear that will allow them to return to their beloved homeland, or whether they must accept the refugee camps as their new and permanent home. Generations have born and known only the refugee camps for the entirety of their lives, and yet mashalah- they all have massive aspirations and unshakeable faith in Allah. I cant wait to visit the refugee camps soon. Ive so many things to learn from our Brothers and Sisters there.
