So the article below is about some new music platform, but Im less concerned with that than with the tone of the piece. This writer doesnt dig Apple or Bono, whatever, thats beside the point. The issue with this article is that he concludes with the sentiment that some people play in living rooms, community centers, and jam sessions for fun, and because of that, because music is enjoyable, artists shouldnt be focused on getting paid for their work. Ive heard this false reasoning before. This statement is being made by a self proclaimed ex-musician who has a day job. Theres nothing wrong with that, sometimes you move on, but for those of us who never intend to become ex-musicians, we need to pay our bills and eat - so yes, getting paid has to be a concern! If musicians cannot make any money by being musicians, we can neither fund our recordings, nor our basic necessities. The same way a carpenter gets paid to build a table, musicians should get paid to build their catalogues. Otherwise, all we can afford to do is play in living rooms, community centers and jam sessions, when we get off work, and have no money to record, tour, hire other musicians, engineers, contractors...yes its true, not ALL music can be made YouTube video style in your bedroom by yourself! It costs money to make good records. Thats why streaming isnt good enough, thats what Bono is trying to say, however clumsily. I dont know what this supposedly super-great new platform is, but I hope it can help artists to get some meager compensation for their lifes work. Yes, work.
