So theres one person missing from an earlier flight on which I was trying to go standby. The gate agent calls her three times. (Im first on the standby list, so it would have been my seat.) The third and final time she calls her FULL NAME, the woman next to me looks up from her laptop and says Oh, thats me, hang on, and goes BACK TO HER CONVERSATION ON HER PHONE, while SLOWLY putting her laptop away and packing up to walk onto the flight. EVERYONE ELSE is already on board. 90 seconds later, shes STILL packing up, and the gate agent calls over to her, Maam, you have 30 seconds or we give your seat away. As she walked onto the plane, the gate agent said maam, you should really pay better attention, there are lots of people in the gate area who wanted your seat. The reason I bring this up? A cautionary tale. If youre at the gate, LISTEN FOR BOARDING ANNOUNCEMENTS, so I and seven other people dont invent scenarios in our heads in which you give up your seat because weve driven a luggage truck over your legs.
