So theres some curious disinformation in the news lately. In morning talk radio, and from various major news sources, Im certain youve heard that not since WWII has a nation annexed another nation for themselves or something to that effect. This is false. Examples of annexation since 1948 include: Portuguese India (modern day Goa) Sikkim Ogaden Rockall (the final territorial expansion of the British Empire) East Timor Western Sahara Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) East Jerusalem Golan Heights Kuwait (leading to the Gulf War) That does not validate Russias actions, but Im not using this post to argue whether or not the annexation of Crimea is warranted. Im personally more interested in why this talking point has suddenly become wide spread. Why the specificity of mentioning World War 2? Why evoke that ominous shadow, and so draw hazy lines between events that triggered the last world war? I think its caught on specifically because it evokes such passionate imagery, and because it involves Russia.
