So tired of seeing all sugar is sugar (in relation to fruit) on the interwebz by misinformed do-gooders. Just copy and paste this whenever you see it. (its one of my must-have special rants) I strongly disagree with all sugar is sugar. This a myth perpetuated by the current paleo fad authors and is not accepted in science at all. Your body uses carbs as a fuel because they ARE the primary source of fuel for a human body, so much so that if we have a very complex system to control our blood sugar to ensure there is always the right amount of glucose flowing through the body. Lack of gluose to the brain will shut it down. Which is why a diabetic who injects too much insulin can go into a coma. This is basic human biology that is concrete. Carbs = primary fuel of the body, fat is secondary fuel and storage fuel, protein = building blocks. If you skimp on your carbs your body has a crazy process to turn the fats into sugar in order to make the krebs cycle (metabolic pathway for energy) work properly. There is not one recorded case of diabetes being cause by wholefoods like fruit, in fact the epidemiology of type 2 diabetes is that the majority is found in overweight sedentary people who eat the typical SAD diet which is high in processed foods, too high in protein and lacks fruit and veg to a large degree. You cannot teach your body to use sugar as fuel as that is what our biology dictates already and any study into human metabolic pathways will show instantly that it is set up from birth to favour sugar (glucose). Which is why children are naturally drawn to sweet things from birth. Now, you can choose to source that glucose from natural healthy wholefoods, whose fibrous rich flesh and nutrient profile mean that the sugar is absorbed slowly to keep that energy source flowing as it should OR you can take the quick fix from manufactured modern foods high in extrinsic sugars. This is why it is SO important to understand the difference. Just saying sugar is sugar is grossly misrepresenting the science of human biology and nutrition. In real life nutritional practice we see a lot of people cutting back on fruit (thanks to fad diets like paleo) then having massive binges of awful carbs like white bread, cake, sweeties etc. You cant change your biological make up. your body will want its primary fuel whether you like it or not - give it what it must have, from the healthy sources that nature provides.
