So to commemorate the anniversary of the D-Day invasion, our local - TopicsExpress

So to commemorate the anniversary of the D-Day invasion, our local group ran a Normandy mega battle recently. We did Juno and Omaha Beaches, and the 82nd Airbornes mission to secure Neuville to cut off one of the routes for reinforcements. Unfortunately with two of the guys having to bail last minute, we didnt have our gliders, medium LCs, and half of our small LCs. Instead we had 3 Canadian LCs, 3 US LCs, and 3 ducks, which was fine for the Americans, but really hurt the Canadians who spent turn 3 and 4 either unable to refloat their landing craft, or with their stuff being delayed. My fiance, who has only ever played a couple demo games, played the US airborne. It took a few turns till she was familiar and comfortable again with the rules, and with a little bit of coaching from both her direct German opponent and the overall Allied commander, she quickly got her wings. She actually managed to take out two bunkers guarding the town, and a battery of 15cm artillery in the first 4 turns, then proceeded to push the static company out of the town, and secure 1/3 of the buildings before the reserve forces of 21st panzer began showing up. She then spent the rest of the game playing hide, seek, and destroy with them. The only mobile forces that made it past Neuville was a heavy aarmored car platoon. LOL The two beaches didnt fair as well. The US never made it off Omaha, living up to its nickname Bloody Omaha. The Canadians did manage to get a platoon of infantry and two units of armor (that died soon after,) off their beach. They got the initial bombardment that hits all deployed German units, and a single naval bombardment every turn after, and only managed to kill about 7 stands total. (Go Navy!) Their airpower did a lot better, but other than taking out an entire platoon of panzergrenadiers threatening the paratroopers, they were mostly ineffective. In the end, it resulted in a minor German victory. The Allies had to get units off both beaches, and secure a foothold in Neuville for a minor victory, and had to get two platoons within command range of the paratroopers in Neuville for a major victory. The Germans just had to hold at least one beach and half of Neuville for a minor victory, and hold both beaches for a major victory.
