So, today is April Fool’s Day. Kind of a strange holiday. Essentially, it is the one day of the year in which it is acceptable, even encouraged, to basically be mean to others. Not for the sake of genuine malevolence or petty cruelty, though; just in the name of humor. Because few things are as funny as humiliating others, you see. For example, an established “classic” prank is putting plastic wrap on a toilet. The effect being that if someone doesn’t notice it, then it will result in their urine splashing all over themselves and the floor of the restroom. Hilariously. And if you happen to luck out and they are actually defecating, well, I’m sure I don’t have to explain why a vile mess involving human body waste is comedy gold. On the internet, prop gags are much harder to pull off, and so most enthusiasts of this holiday settle for simple deceit... which makes it not much different from the internet on any other given day, except that the misinformation is deliberately intentional. Whereas ordinarily you can scroll through Facebook and learn all sorts of complete bullshit- like ‘fruit smoothies cure cancer’, and ‘obscure plant oils cure every other known disease’, and ‘kangaroos are a type of dinosaur’, and ‘republicans are sentient’, and ‘some woman is handing out notes to fat kids on Halloween telling them to diet and exercise’, and ‘candy flavored meth is being sold to school kids’, and so on and so on. Mostly obvious nonsense, but since Facebook has a ‘share’ button, and not a ‘check facts’ button, this crap continues to get passed around, which is actually pretty damned annoying since it is just making people dumber. Today is also “National Atheists Day”, because of another ridiculous story about a cheeky judge that despite being obviously made up, people still took seriously. Really, how the human race gets by with only one “fool day” per year is a mystery.
