So today is World Autism Awareness Day. Autism is a complicated thing. Its not a disease. You cant catch it. Its a neurological disorder that children are born with. It can affect a whole range of things, from their senses to their social skills to their learning. Something you dont even notice can wreck their world- a fan, the lights, sirens in the distance, a light touch on the arm. Autism is also a spectrum disorder, which means that each child is different. That is why its so challenging to understand. Autism has also been very trendy in recent years. Celebrities using their status as a means of manipulating parents who are scared and want answers. There are miracle cures and treatments that generate a hope in parents that is unfounded. You cant cure a child with Autism because its not a disease. It isnt from a bacteria or a virus. There have been amazing advances in helping these children through the amazing work of parents, doctors and therapists. 1 in 68 children are being diagnosed with Autism. I would wager at this time that everyone knows someone with Autism and if you dont, you will soon. I am not going to get into the causes or the whys because I am not a doctor nor am I a researcher. I will, however, beg you to have awareness. Children with Autism can have big struggles. Their parents are doing everything they can to help their child but the truth is- sometimes there is NOTHING that can be done in that moment. So if you see a parent struggling with a snotty or ill-behaved or spoiled child...save your judgement and pass on a bit of understanding. *show grace* If you have ANY questions about Autism, Ryans story, therapies, ANYTHING related to Autism...please ask me. If you notice that your child has some *different* tendencies than other children...please ask your doctor. I know its scary...its the scariest thing ever; but getting help for your child is your duty. And the sooner the better!! :)
