This morning saw the start of the packaging of envelopes for postal balloting. With 12,204 postal ballot applications received, its now a race against time. 12,204 individual envelopes will now have to be sent out to those casting their votes by post. By this evening, packages will already start making it’s way to those unable to vote on September 17th. “The Fiji elections Office will put all the postal ballots in DHL envelopes and this will then be transported out of the country by DHL and once the person receives or even locally has completed his or her postal ballot they can then contact us, contact DHL for a door to door pickup and DHL will then bring these envelopes back,” said Mohammed Saneem, the Supervisor of Elections The elections office anticipate packaging and sending about 2,800 envelopes today. “We have the postal envelope, postal ballot paper, the voter instruction booklet, brochure to assist the person on how to fill the ballot paper and how to send it back. We also have a DHL contact centre list so that the person knows which number to call in their country. It will also have a secret envelope in which the ballot paper will go and a transmission enevlope which will where the person fills out his or her full details.” With one ballot paper per person, accuracy of voting is encouraged. “With the postal ballot application we can not send two ballot papers because simply one person has the RIGHT to only one vote and in the event the person makes a mistake one of the ways to do it is to actually clearly cross off the number the person has marked on and mark the next one. But we can not within the time frame if the person is not able to correspond with, we will not be able to send a second ballot paper across.” The final date to receive the postal ballots is no later than 6pm on election day. fijione.tv/fijian-elections-office-sends-out-ballot-papers/
