So tonight was my first time attending an interfaith event. In the past, from my study days to the recent past, Ive come across many scholars who are extremely against interfaith events and activities- to the extent that they will at times equate it to Kufr itself. On the other hand, there are people, and usually they are not scholars, who are very vocal about participating in interfaith. The fact is, both parties are correct, but at the same time, both parties tend to place their sources out of context. For some communities, especially in America, interfaith is crucial. It is a viable way of bridging misunderstanding and developing tolerance for Muslims, without which living in those areas are not only difficult, but dangerous too, and you can forget about building a masjid. In other areas, interfaith is not as important, rather just a way to get to know your neighbors of other faiths. In the first scenario, not only is interfaith recommended, it should be highly encouraged, even it requires us to compromise some minor aspects. There is much more at stake than just interactions and meetings; were talking about the safety of ourselves and family. In the latter situation, it will be fine, as long as it doesnt cross the boundaries of Islam. May Allah grant us understanding. Aamin.
