So we are at a stop light on my way back from work today and my auto driver pops a mouth refresher into his mouth and tosses the wrapper on the street. I suggest to him that he should hang a plastic bag in his auto to dispose of trash - instead of tossing it on the road. Perhaps, he can then exhort his passengers to follow his example. He is immediately contrite. I continue, Do you know that in most developed nations there is no trash on the streets - people put small trash like candy wrappers etc in their pocket till they find an appropriate place to trash it? I pontificate further, Even we desis, when visiting these countries, do the same. But as soon as we land back in India, we spit on the tarmac - we are home, after all. My auto driver now wants to put up a fancy metal trash container inside his auto with a plastic trash bag inside - with a sign on it for passengers to toss their trash into his trash can instead of the street. One at a time. ps: I take the last drag of my cigarette. Sir yeh kahan phenkoge? my auto driver asks me as Im about to toss the spent cigarette on the street. One at a time.
