So, we hosted a slumber party a few nights ago with the 7 and under crowd. I kept a record of the happenings. Thought you all might get a kick out of it before I head off to take a nap. :) The Slumber Party 5pm - SLUMBER PARTY! Got some pizza, popcorn, the movie Turbo, and Mario Karts. 5:30 - Happily munching while we joke around and I read them the rest of Runaway Ralph. 7:30pm - Toddler goes off to bed 8:30 - Time to get the kids ready for bed. Goes off mostly without a hitch as we all make our “beds” in the living room with Mama sleeping on the big couch. Kids can whisper until 8:45. 9:00 - The kids get their 5 minute warning to stop whispering 9:10 - Kid #5 needs to go potty. So does #4. Toddler is chattering upstairs so we all know he’s not asleep. 9:15 - Kid #1 asks to switch spots with kid #2 because #3 is “staring into his ear.” 9:20 - Kid #5 has to go potty again and steps on #4’s head on her way. 9:30 - Mama gets stern with the boys and they finally settle down. 9:45 - After a 15 minute tug of war over blankets, kid #5 is taken upstairs and loses privileges to the party. She cries pitifully. 10:00 - Thus begins kid #3’s epic night of getting up and re-arranging his pillow and blankets every half hour. 11:00 - Sigh. Mama can’t sleep. 12am - I stop trying to be productive and just lay on the couch. 12:30 - Kids are loud even when they sleep. I had no idea #4 talked in her sleep. She proceeds to argue with someone all night long. 1:00 - I can hear every flutter and thump in the house. I start to feel bad about #5 being exiled to the upstairs. I go get her and bring her and the entourage of blankets and loveys down. 1:30 - I had no idea #5 was so gassy. 2:00 - I doze off and dream about kids talking in their sleep and fighting over blankets. Where’s my dream about Hawaii? 3:00 - I’m wide awake. This is ridiculous! 3:30 - #3 gets up and rearranges his pillow and blankets again and I finally learn from him that it’s because “the blanket is sliding away from the pillow.” 3:35 - #3 is now sleeping on the couch. I resign and go to my room but leave the door open so I can see/hear. I’m a helicopter that way. 4:30 - Wake up to some idiot splitting firewood in the street! The echo is unreal. Realize after a few minutes that it’s a funny breathing noise coming from the husband. Go back to sleep. 5:00 - Run into the living room where #4 is yelling “oh no, that’s not good!” ...In her sleep. Sigh. 6:00 - Up for no reason, thinking, if I ever even utter the words “sleepover” again, someone had better punch me in the face. Maybe then I’ll remember this night. Drift back off to sleep. 7:15 - The toddler is wide awake now and singing “We Will Rock You” and chattering to himself. Now everyone is awake. 7:30 - Having fun eating rice cereal and playing until the other mom comes to pick up. The kids say they all had a wonderful time, and I get warm fuzzies thinking about the memories they are making with their siblings and friends. I know we’ll do it again and I’ll be happy to! 8:00 - The guests leave and my son asks “can we do a sleepover again sometime, Mom?” I smile and say yes. But it will be a long while. Still worth it. The End.
