So what do I make of Google’s IO announcements? Google’s design is getting much more refined and actually pretty but they still lag on interaction design and their holistic approach. Design direction is still erratic and symptomatic of “design by commitee”. Google is trying to reach into all aspects of your daily life, your car, your watch, your TV; and all that would be fine and dandy if Google wasn’t using this as a drive for their main core-core business of selling ads. I would take this meddling much more lightly if it weren’t for this underlying driver. And no, I don’t eat that “trying to make a better world” BS. But the crux of it is the fundamental flaw in their ecosystem, the platform doesn’t reach our computers yet. And no, Chromebooks don’t count. Regarding wearables, their watch is certainly nice but I feel that its sole use as a secondary screen to your watch is still lacking and I hope someone creates really compelling use cases for smartwaches as there are none yet.
