So why didnt I find out about the plight, resistance, and beauty of the Dalit peoples and their culture, even after 5 1/2 years of living in Gaudiya Vaisnava ashrams, until I got to Union Theological Seminary? I know part of that is on me, but there is also the lack of...what in ISKCON? Concern for Dalits? Awareness of Dalits? I knew it way back when that I needed to leave the ashram to grow and to learn and to be challenged in a much needed way. Encountering the reality of the Dalit peoples, not just theoretically and theologically but personally, confirmed my instincts were right.
