So with debate reaching fever pitch on rail trails verus railways for northern NSW here is a costing estimate of road versus the restoring the Casino to Murwillimbah railway line - The ARUP report says $900million between Casino to Murwillumbah including an extra track. The track is 135km long with bridges and tunnels. So lets compare to the road projects in our region. Ballina bypass cost us $890million - but its only 12.1km long! Tintenbar to Ewingsdale cost us $1.1billion - 17.3km including large tunnel. Banora Point upgrade cost us $1.5billion and only 2.5km long! So lets calculate here if Ballina bypass is 135kms long - $74million per km for Ballina bypass compared to $6.6million for the railway. If our rail line (from Caisno to Murwillimbah) cost same as Ballina bypass....... that would be $9.990billion!!! ..... when it is estimated at $900m. So these rough estimates show that per kilometre.... roads are way way far more costlier than railways and the NSW Govt is refusing to admit this and reinstall the NSW north coast rail services.
