So yesterday I got a call to pick my son up from school. When I got there, my bug seemed upsed. Not melt down upset, but just upset. Come to find out, there was an issue regarding him walking around the school before recess. Apparently the sun was hurting his eyes (he has issues with bright lights some times, like his momma) and so he cut through some where so the sun wouldnt be in his eyes. The teacher made a big stink about is, so bug redid part of the lap, the teacher still wasnt happy, demanded again that he walk the whole thing... Well, this turned into a huge power struggle. With ASD, you cant drill them like NTs (neuro typical aka normal). You have to give them a few minutes to reset themselves. If you dont, the issue grows, their anxiety grows, and you are fueling a meltdown before you know it. The counselor had a talk with the teacher. Bug didnt want to come inside, he was still upset. So, they called me, which prompted him to haul his butt inside. When we were ready to leave, my son sat on the bench outside of the office and cried. Mom, I tried. We sat there for a few minutes, talked about what could have done differently, we cracked a few jokes, and then he was ready to leave. The level of ignorance about my sons condition in his school is frustrating. It appears from my side, at least, that ASD and or aspbergers is looked at as more of a behavioral issue than a neurological issue. And on that note, a shout out to Mrs. Burk, the school counseler! She attended an autism workshop of sorts, which probably opened her eyes to a lot of my childs behavior that made no sence to anyone before. Thank you for your willingness to do that. Thank you for your willingness to learn. Thank you.
