At first glance, the Argentine writer’s animus toward the beautiful game seems to reflect the attitude of today’s typical soccer hater, whose lazy gibes have almost become a refrain by now: Soccer is boring. There are too many tie scores. I can’t stand the fake injuries. says this writer in a puny, dismissive attempt to negate the validity of those criticisms. Then theres, the truly bad acting in fake falls; teams are playing for ties to avoid competing against other teams. Oh, and then theres the corruption and the savage fans,the drinking and, um, the murder. Id go further. Soccer is war by another name with many fans who have precious little else in their lives. Borges elaborates.
