Socialism best for Nigeria - ASUU By our reporter Joe Effiong Calabar - University Lecturers in Nigeria, under the umbrella of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have called for the introduction of ‘Socialist Welfare State’ in the country if myriads of economic, security and social challenges are to be tackled frontally. Addressing Journalists in Calabar, the Cross River state capital on Monday, ASUU National President, Dr. Nasir Isa who read the position of the union from a prepared statement, said the Socialist Welfare State would involve radical and effective measures to substantially elevate the level of the welfare of the poor. The statement linked the country’s challenges to ‘global capitalism,” and enumerated such challenges to include corruption, worsening of income and capital inequality, unemployment and diminishing access to education and health by the poor. It insisted that the new concept “shall strictly adhere to the principles of ownership and control of the economy,” adding that the tools to confront ...
