SodaStream manufactures and markets home carbonation systems and produces its product in an illegal Israeli colony on the West Bank. There is a growing world wide movement to boycott this product. SodaStream supporters argue that it employees 500 Palestinian workers and pays them the same as Israelis. We should not be deceived by this. This is like a rapist telling his victim, Dont worry, I am wearing a condom. It also reminds me of the situation in South Africa that Nelson Mandala referred with regards to the intentions of the White South African government. He wrote, The government’s intention in creating the homeland system was to keep the Transkei and other African areas as reservoirs of cheap labor for white industry. At the same time, the covert goal of the government was to create an African middle class to blunt the appeal of the ANC [African National Congress] and the liberation struggle. This is exactly what the Israelis are doing and what they are arguing in trying to counter the ever-growing boycott movement against Israel. They want to maintain a subservient cheap Palestinian workforce for their Jewish industry while at the same time, it wants to create a Palestinian middle class to blunt the ever-growing Intifadah movement should the so called peace talks collapse. Know the real intent of Israel. While I am saddened that Palestinians may lose their jobs because of the boycott of SodaStream, I believe the greater good for all Palestinians is more important.
