Sola Scriptura Context, context, context. How many times must I - TopicsExpress

Sola Scriptura Context, context, context. How many times must I say it? Read OUTSIDE the Bible! How can we possibly understand the Bible without reading it in context: the context of the material world, and the context of non-fiction scholarly work. How can one see the inspiration of the Bible, which means it is holy and different, without seeing it in contrast to what is unholy? I dont mean disgusting things; I mean the very best of the worlds thinking. Those who called the Bible inspired, including its own authors had read other books. You might like to follow their example. After that, it becomes obvious. The Bible is a superb measure by which to assess the value of other thinking. One can look at literary quality if one is that kind of person, and the Bible is OK, and in the Song of Songs, it is superb; but what matters is content. The Bible does not teach us how to write fancy, it teaches us how to think clearly. Good science and history education should lead to people recognising the inspiration of the Bible. What does that say about the syllabus (not teachers or good intentions) of western education? And let me assure you. Literary reading of the Bible alone will bring no revival. The Bible is anthropological science written fancy and written rough, both. It rocks, but you have to do hard yards in hard social science (not soft politics), if you really want to come to grips with what the inspiration and inerrancy of scripture means, and we need to be able to show others our progress as we learn if we want them to progress. If all else fails, stick to cross and resurrection demonstrating certainty of forgiveness, that absolutely is the main message, and it is the stuff of sheer miracle and revelation. That kind of thing can be known no other way. But it is the deliberate intention of the Bible itself to prove its truth by the superior ethics of its fan club members. And you cant do that by saying your ethics are superior because God said so. That is the anciently debunked circularity of divine command theory ethics, and would put demons on the throne of heaven as readily as a good God of perfectly trustworthy happy integrity. Content, content, content.
