Solar Takes over California March 15, 2014 The March 15 - TopicsExpress

Solar Takes over California March 15, 2014 The March 15 Business Section of the newspaper reported that there will be nine solar plants in operation in just two counties (Riverside and San Bernardino) here in southern California. Three of these plants are in operation, three have been approved, and three are pending. These plants will occupy 46 square miles of government property. Many of them are in or on the edge of National Parks or National Preserve lands. It is reported that these nine plants will generate 3,713 megawatts of electricity. That means when they are functioning. They of course do not function at night or on cloudy days. That means conventional power plants of equivalent capacity must be ready to take over (that is probably at least 40% of the time). Yet there was no report of such plants being constructed. Since solar power costs as much as ten times as much as that generated by a conventional plant how will the tax payers whose income has decreased by $7 K per year be able to pay for that solar energy? I am also sure the governments have provided massive subsidies to these solar plants. How do they expect the tax payers to pay for it in addition to paying for the interest on the $17.4 trillion national debt? I wonder if the operators of those plants are paying the tax payers for the use of those 46 square miles of land. C. J. Doubek, Ch. E., P. E.
