Solutions for sustainable industrial water treatment Sustainable water treatment is an essential part of many industrial processes, whether it is in cooling systems used by manufacturers or in the management and monitoring of waste and effluent. The biggest problem with boilers is scaling caused by the minerals present in water supplies. When the water is boiled the minerals are deposited and leave a coating on the insides of pipes, machinery and heat exchangers. This can dramatically reduce their efficiency and mean companies are faced with higher energy costs. If left untreated the problem can worsen until it causes serious problems. Cooling water systems have similar scaling problems to boiler systems but companies also need to account for bio-fouling and corrosion, especially if seawater is used. Untreated water can cause serious damage to cooling systems and lead to unsafe plant operations. Companies regularly use chemicals to treat problems but this can be a complete waste if the issue behind the problem is not tackled. Purifying water is important because supplies that are too acidic or alkali can cause damage to equipment, pipes and other components. It is also good practice to monitor the level of dissolved oxygen (DO) because this is a leading cause of corrosion. Waste and effluent systems need to be managed carefully to ensure they flow freely and dont leak. The environmental damage if pipes leaked and allowed waste to contaminate the surrounding area can be extensive, not to mention the cost of clean-up. It is the responsibility of companies to ensure their operations are as green as possible and causing as little damage. They should ensure that their effluent treatment plant (EFT) systems are operating efficiently and manage the levels of bio-fouling, corrosion and scaling in systems. Industrial water treatment is a very broad industry used for a whole array of different purposes.
