Somalia -holding the baby! Posted on July 4, 2011 0 by Drew Ddembe on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 9:02pm Munange thanks for pointing me in that direction. foreignpolicy/articles/2010/08/25/somalias_hour_of_need I wonder whether Museveni is willing to put his mouth where his fine words are and send his son into Mogadishu! This Somali animal is very compliocated. the more I look at it, the more convoluted it appears. it appears to me that we are not wanted in mogadishu for probably the same reasons that the Americans are not wanted in iraq -the lives of the people on the street are worse off as a result of intervention than before intervention! A All reports suggested that the self interest of local traders had partnered with the so called islamists to create a home grown solution and stability which was disrupted by America’s foreign policy that was afraid that Al Shabab would become a sanctuary for Al Quaeda. In came the American sponsored Ethiopian troops in a blitzkrieg that shattered the tenuous peace that Al Shabab appeared to have created! Unfortunately the use of Ethiopia ignored history between Somali’s and Ethiopia resulting into the reopening of old wounds! if Somali’s hate anyone more than they hate us, it is Ethiopians! So the Americans and the Ethiopians crapped on Somalia because they did not like the idea of the country being controlled by Islamists and we took responsibility for the pieces! Not particularly clever! if you break it, you own it -so not quite sure why we agreed to clear up their mess for them! It is easier to destroy than to build as the Americans have now found out from their experience in Iraq! The history of Somalia is filled with conflict. It appears that the dictatorship they had between the 70′s and the 80′s was actually a stabilising force in an otherwise fractured society. The British had long and murderous wars for which the British should be accused of genocide and mass murder with the Somali’s! The rebelion of the “Mad Mullah” at the turn of the last century provides a snapshot of islamic and clan conflict in Somalia. There is no doubt that someone should do something about Somalia. The real question is who and how? The so called government that Ugandan troops are in Somalia to protect have no legitimacy and do not even control more than a few blocks of the capital! it kind of reminds me of the Chalabi’s and the Wamba dia Wamba’s and Bemba’s My worry is that while ugandan troops went into Somalia as peace keepers, it is going to be untenable to maintain that role and they will have to change their mandate to an offensive one. Unfortunately the international community and the African union are only paying lip service to this one and leaving us to hold the baby!!! An all out offense in Somalia risks sucking us deeper and deeper into a mire and we will see more and more of these scenes and our troops coming home in body bags! this is likely to be even more so if our troops are viewed as occupiers! the perspective of people changes very rapidly when they are forced to pay the price of war involuntarily! The very people you believe you are liberating are the same ones who will blow you up! This is one that the Somali’s themselves have got to take up rather than us providing a foreign occupying force to protect an illegitimate government. Talk about painting bulls eyes on our foreheads!!!
