Some Closet Cleaning Tips . . . Are you almost finished sorting through your closet or are you still looking for the right incentive to get you going? Here are some tips you may find useful as you accomplish the task: -start by moving all your last season wardrobe items to another closet or to rolling racks in the basement if closet space is limited. -deal with the current season only (don’t try to organize a whole year of clothing) and get rid of everything that doesn’t fit! Have boxes at the ready labeled ‘charity’ and ‘consignment’. Try on everything in your closet and drawers and with each piece you try, look in the mirror and ask yourself if you really would reach for this next time you go to get dressed. Does it suit your lifestyle and personality? Does it make you feel good? Is it comfortable? Do you like it (we all make shopping mistakes)? Is it out of date? Most importantly, does it fit properly? Other than special occasion wear, if you haven’t worn something in the last 12 months, there’s a reason and it might as well be in the hands of someone who will wear it and not taking up valuable space in your closet. -clothes that age you, look dumpy, are out of shape, in disrepair, pilly or that you simply don’t want anymore don’t deserve space in your closet Do the same with socks, underwear and shoes. -you’ll be amazed at how little of what is hanging in your closet you actually wear! If you find it too hard to part with certain things even if you don’t ever wear them, add a third box labeled ‘undecided’ and store it in a far corner of the basement accessible should you decide you can’t live without something, but ready to pass along after a year of ignoring it. The other 2 boxes should be closed up and immediately put in your car and delivered to the local consignment store and your favorite charities. -once you’ve completed your trying on session and the boxes are out of your way, give your closet a good clean and put all the clothes you’re planning to keep on coordinated hangers – ie all black, white or clear hangers – you’ll enjoy the visual of this balanced look. Lastly, hang all the hangers of clothing that you’ve decided to keep with the hook of the hanger facing forward (incorrectly) and then each time you wear something, hang it’s hanger the correct direction. At the end of the season, you will easily be able to identify what clothes didn’t get any attention and sorting will be easier . . . I wonder how many hangers will still face the wrong way? -considering the clothes left hanging in your closet, make a list of all the items you require for the current season based on your lifestyle – casual, career, evenings out and special occasion. Once you have your list prepared, phone or stop by your favorite clothing boutique and talk to someone about your wardrobe requirements. Sales personnel can do a better job for you if you are able to give them time and an opportunity to understand your needs, your style and your budget. It may take 2 or 3 trips to coordinate everything so don’t be overambitious about what you can achieve in one trip. -if you have pieces in your closet that need to be coordinated with other pieces, do bring them along when you go shopping – the salesperson will be better able to help you coordinate the new look and ensure that the colors work together. -divide whatever closet space you have into categories: pants dresses jackets tops suits skirts these categories can be further categorized into casual, career and special occasion if you wish ~ Happy Closet Cleaning ~
