Some Dressage trainers teach riders to perform downward - TopicsExpress

Some Dressage trainers teach riders to perform downward transitions by tightening their knee and thigh. Horses definitely do stop when the rider tightens their thighs… but there is a price to pay with this method. While it may work ok for the heavier, less sensitive horse, the sensitive type will tighten their backs, and stop coming *through* when the rider does this. Instead wrap your entire leg lightly around the horse (no clamping!) in your half halts and downward transitions. This way you are asking him to keep engagement behind, while still inviting him to stay *up* in his back.
