Some GOOD news to share! We went to Leeds General Infirmary today to see the Neurologist about Ians broken neck. After Ians last CT scan, the top neurologist and spinal surgeon in this area gave us some bad news. Ians broken neck hadnt healed after 5 1/2 months. He ideally needed an op to fix it but it is a really difficult operation that the surgeon had basically said he didnt want to do because Ian would likely end up paralysed or worse after it. He would only do it as a very last resort as it means inserting screws into the back of Ians neck (the C2 bone area has all the main nerves massed around it). Due to his age, the option to put screws into his neck to fix the broken C2 bone and also realign the dislodged peg there in his already bad neck (arthritis) wasnt looking feasible. He has worn his neck brace for 7 months now, it has been a very difficult and frustrating time for him as he likes to keep busy and active. We had been dreading the next option which would involve an operation to fix a frame (like scaffolding) into his shoulders to keep his neck permanently fixed in position. It has felt a LONG time in limbo waiting to know what the next appointment would reveal. Over the Halloween weekend Ian thought his own Doctor, a certain Dr Frankenstein, would help by inserting a bolt!!! Anyway, long story short, today the specialist basically said that as long as Ian is VERY careful, he can removed the brace unless he feels he needs to wear it. He cannot have physio yet, but can do some gentle neck exercise (up/down and limited side to side movements), then see how he goes on with that. All is good, onward and upwards!!
