Unafraid to venture beyond the normative boundaries of Jewishness. Capacity to forgive oneself at least twice daily. Able to provide Free Advice, spontaneously, in public, to any student. Able to locate smoked fish that’s actually smoked within the metropolitan vicinity. Often capable of remembering, “It’s not about you.” No major problems living with the emotional seesaw of teaching. General grasp of at least ten geo-political conflicts. Access to conceptual artists. Sympathetic to Jews who find Judaism to be too narrow of an identity for the emerging future. Sincere desire to understand the function of the mazalot / constellations. Wisdom derived from several years of messy spiritual adventures. Ability to notice “strange thoughts” and then let them go on their way. Strong distaste for cynicism. Capacity to sit in silence with students. Strong foundation in the works of AJ Heschel. Not too strong of a foundation in any single Jewish genre.
