Some excellent Wolf Awareness Week events at the Sigrid Olson Environmental Institute at Nothland College in Wisconsin starting tonight: Monday, October 13 | 7 p.m. A Deer Nerd Looks at Wolf Management in Wisconsin Dr. Van Deelen, from the University of Wisconsin—Madison Department of Forest & Wildlife Ecology, will examine the science and history of deer and wolf management in Wisconsin using both historic and contemporary research. Sentry Room, Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute Free and open to the public. Wednesday, October 15 | 7 p.m. Wild Wolves We Have Known Dick Thiel will explore Wisconsin wolf policy in the context of the development of wildlife management from the 1920s to the creatures extirpation in the late 1950s, ending in 1978—the beginning of the modern-day wolf era. Saturday, October 18 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.* Wolf Ecology Workshop This class, led by Erik Olson, Adrian Wydeven, and Sarah Boles, will cover the basics of wolf ecology and management, including natural history, identification, monitoring techniques, wolf-human conflicts, predator-prey ecology, and wolf management. Sentry Room, Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute $25 Online Registration Required Saturday, November 1 | 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.* Volunteer Carnivore Track-Training & Refresher Class This class, led by Adrian Wydeven and Sarah Boles, will teach the basics of tracking medium to large size carnivores in Wisconsin, including track identification, gait patterns, and conducting snow track survey.
