Some exciting news from Sweet Tea Shakespeare! Something sweet is coming to the Fayetteville theatre scene. Sweet Tea Shakespeare launches Honey, a new series by and for women. Honey aims to produce more opportunities for and showcase the talents of women artists in the theatre. With its roots based deeply in Shakespearean tradition, Sweet Tea Shakespeares Honey will produce both classic and original pieces featuring mostly female casts and crews and focusing on the perspective of captivating women characters. November - Sophocles Antigone For its premiere production, Honey will share the classic tale of grief, strength, and corruption. Faced with the immeasurable pain of losing a brother, Antigone must choose between honoring his memory, or meet her death at the hands of her evil uncle, Kreon. February - Sweet Words: New Work Written, performed, and directed all by women, Honeys second production will truly give voice to women of all backgrounds. With all original pieces, including pieces by local artists, this production will be sure to leave you with laughs, tears, and a renewed sense of value in the views of the women in your life. MISSION Honey, a Sweet Tea Shakespeare series, imagines, enacts, and embraces the possibility of a theatre for women in the spirit of Shakespeares strong female roles: Beatrice, Rosalind, Viola, among others. Honey seeks to employ the ingenuity and drive behind Shakespeares own company as it both promotes and celebrates the talents of women -- Including actors, writers, directors, designers, and others -- of the community in classical, original, and newer work. VISION Honey works to inspire all artists to realize the value of the female perspective in and through the theatrical experience. WHY A SERIES FOR WOMEN? Shakespeare ran a company comprised exclusively of men and boys. As a result, the work we receive from Shakespeare and other classic playwrights contain more male characters, more male characters in leading roles, and can diminish, at times, the role of women in the theatrical enterprise. Honey works to provide more opportunities for women in the theatre and compliments our Shakespeare-driven season.
