Some food for thought for thought! #Joseph_Kabuleta Last year Cristiano Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or on the basis of his three goals in a World Cup play-off against Sweden. That was a record that must be attached to Ronaldo’s name if the word fairness still exists in the English lexicon; the only man to have won the award for squeezing his nation through the backdoor to the World Cup. In the same year, Cristiano became the first trophy-less player to win the Ballon dOr, beating Franck Ribery who had won a treble with Bayern and added the World Club Championship for good measure. Another Cristiano record! A round of applause please. The records keep tumbling. This year it looks like the Real Madrid man is going to become the first ever World Cup flop to win the award in a World Cup year. Another record! Another round of applause please. Just to refresh your memory, previous awards have been given purely on World Cup form. Fabio Cannavaro (2006) did nothing outside of Germany to deserve him of the award, neither did Ronaldo (2002), who was injured all season and played only 7 games for Inter Milan, but both won the World Player award purely on the basis of their World Cup exploits. In fact, the World Cup must be a very important tournament seeing as Cristiano won the big award for simply qualifying his nation for it, yet Lionel Messi’s goals that propelled his nation to the final don’t seem to matter. Neither does the fact that he was officially the best player at the tournament. Neither does the fact that he only recently reached a La Liga and European Champions League milestone. Of course we have been reminded that Messi won nothing this year. That must really matter. Now let’s all forget that it didn’t matter last year when Cristiano’s zero beat Ribery’s four trophies. Welcome to the new world of football reality where politics rules and Ronaldo reigns.
