Some great comments from readers on the BBC News site re Bradley Manning sentencing, many of which I agree with. "When exposing a crime is treated as committing a crime, you are ruled by criminals" "one day humanity will look back and call these times the digital dark ages, when governments and corporations were out of control, and they will wonder how we let it happen." "Just remind me - what sentence did the troops who beat, tortured and mutliated people in Abu-Grade get....?" "When does the trial of the US and UK intelligence services begin?" "Liars United 1, Truthtellers 0" "Have you seen the information he leaked. It puts no one at risk, just shows the war crimes committed by the American Army. Helicopter locked on and blows up a van with children and journalists in. This is 1 example. The time when a man gets imprisoned for the majority of his life for leaking the secrets of the illegal wars is a sad time. Shame on America" "Imagine how many years Bush and Blair might get then ? Two people that are responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths" "Manning did the world a service by revealing the callous disregard for human life and human values which has taken hold in the highest levels of the very governments which we expect to uphold those values. Who can forget the video which revealed the casual way that the Reuters journalist and other civilians were gunned down by the US helicopter?" "Whistleblowing is always seen as a crime - by criminals." "George Orwell wrote that "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." That Bradley Manning is being punished as though he were in fact a dangerous revolutionary tells us something about the times we are living in. He has my greatest respect and I only hope that in due course, his revolutionary act will be appreciated as a stand against corruption and abuse of power."
