Some more updates from our Ocean Research and Marine Conservation Programme in South Africa - there were 21, yes 21 (!) dead baby Blue Sharks Prionace glauca on the beach in Natures Valley today. Initial thoughts were that it could have been irresponsible fishermen, but examination of the scene and the bodies suggests it is more likely to be linked to the sudden temperature change in the water yesterday. Blue Sharks are classified as Near Threatened by IUCN, and give birth to live young, which may explain the large number present. Average litter sizes are 40-50 pups, although large females can have up to 320 pups! A number of dead jellyfish probably confirms the temperature theory... Sad to see them dead, but a great opportunity to see these magnificent fish...
