Some new photos of the old 1976 San Francisco - TopicsExpress

Some new photos of the old 1976 San Francisco snowfall.......... Bill Fox was a 25-year-old San Francisco cop coming off the night shift on Feb. 5, 1976, when snow started falling on his windowsill. I’m imagining Fox with a Clint Eastwood haircut and sports coat with patches on the sleeves, the camera equivalent of a .44 Magnum Smith & Wesson and no hesitation what to do next. Like many Bay Area residents, Fox sprung into action on the rarest of rare meteorological days in San Francisco, and took some wonderful photos of the snowfall. (See his photos above, and read his story below.) The Big Event is going to spend the year collecting reader photos and videos from the 1976 snowstorm, with plans to build an interactive map. If you have 1976 snow photos or video you’d like to share, please send them my way at phartlaub@sfchronicle with “1976 snow” in the subject line, and a few short memories from the day. After we first floated the idea in our post about the man who skied six blocks in Noe Valley, we received an encouraging response. Below are eight more photos and stories. Four of them are galleries — make sure you flip through and see all the photos. You can read Fox’s wonderful memories of the night at the bottom of the post. Thanks to everyone who sent photos. I’m very excited about this project.
