Some of God’s people are so full of spiritual manifestations and speak so much about the Spirit’s power, but they despise sinners. They look down on them or ignore them totally, pursuing their next spiritual high at some conference or church meeting. They see themselves as superior to non-Christians, and when the rubber hits the road, they do not reach out to those who are lost. And when they do so it’s with a condescending attitude and in a culturally alienating manner. Where is their love? Where is their compassion? The reason God gives His power is for the sake of these very people whom we avoid and despise. It’s time to repent from the sin of spiritual pride and apathy. We need to repent for not being willing to get our hands dirty in the work of reaching the sinners. It’s one thing to clap your hands and shout “Hallelujah!” in meetings, but are you ready to engage in the real battle for souls? Then, there are those who have been deeply hurt by these forms of outward, showy spirituality and have been filled with concern for all those who are lost and hurting. They have understanding and compassion for the lost and they reach out to mend the hearts of those around them, but they are powerless and ineffective because they themselves are still full of pain. Some have power without love and others have love without power. It’s time for these two things to come together. Let’s learn to reach out with both the hands of love and power. It’s the love of Christ that will constrain you to speak about Him and it’s His power that will enable you to do so effectively.
