Some of you know the situation and some of you do not. I am writing this as a reminder to all. There are those close to you with issues, addictions. When you call up that friend and say, “Let’s have a drink”…keep in mind, it’s never just “A drink”. It’s 12…24…or more. It’s one more hour that person’s family is in pain. It’s one more step towards destroying someone’s life. No, they aren’t your responsibility…but know, as a friend, you could spare someone heartache. I’m not usually a sympathetic person. I do not feel sorry for myself, and very rarely feel sorry for others. Until now…I’m telling you this because I am the person who fought a little too hard, stayed a little too long, and gave a little too much. Keep in mind…that one night you see your friend drunk, you do not know what happens at home. It’s not just that one night. It’s not that one drink…it never is. It is never just you that sees them stumbling, slurring, and driving away….It’s also their kids..or loved ones who are trying to make a stand and fight for them. It isn’t just you that think they smell of beer. It’s their kids they decide to hug when they get home. They never deserve that. So…as you hand your friend that “just a drink”…please keep that in mind. I do not care if they’ve been that way for years. It is never just that drink. It’s never just that night. It’s your friend…it’s their family….it’s their life. Please be a friend. When you see someone struggling through this…Don’t turn a blind eye. It’s not your responsibility, but do not be part of the problem. When people reach out to you for help, don’t downplay it. They know what is happening at home. They know the truth. Not the drunk person…slurring to you how everything is okay as you hand them one more drink before they start up their car. I’ve lost two family members to a DUI driver and a co-worker/friend.
