Some people ask me about the meaning of the glass image on the book cover. The best way to explain it is to share a passage from the book which shows the symbolism: "I was highly stressed the day I flew to Australia. During the afternoon, I packed my suitcase in a mad panic, filling it to the brim and making it impossible to close. Afterwards, I drove to the office, where I worked. I was still on sick leave, but I wanted to say goodbye to my colleagues before I left Norway. Driving too fast, I grazed the door of a parked car with my side mirror. At the office, I saw that my side mirror had shattered: the bits of glass were only just hanging together by threads. My visit was short. When I left, I took Hedda and May out to the car. They stood quietly, as if wondering what I wanted to show them. “That’s me,” I said, pointing to the fragmented glass. I felt I had fragmented into a thousand pieces and that the pieces lay spread out all over the pavement. I drove back to the house in a hurry. I seemed to be on a mission that didn’t make sense to anyone, least of all me. I had always had control over my life. I’ve since learnt that people who knew me thought of me as strong. Yet here I was, falling apart at the seams, barely hanging together by a thread."
