Some people think it’s ok to use social media as a tool to threaten, intimidate, and try to damage people’s and businesses’ reputations. While being completely wrong. Just out of sheer petty childish spite. Mr. Joseph Carasso Jr. – MD of Citi Bank Tanzania, no less - together with his wife Gabi Carasso, had a very late dinner in my restaurant Friday night. 45 minutes AFTER closing time, his sweet tooth kicks in and he wants to order dessert. It was explained to him by our manager that the kitchen was closed and all the staff already left, but, extremely surprising for a person in his position, he did not seem to grasp the concept of “closing time”. He told my manager that she should personally come by each table and verbally anounce that it’s closing time. (Silly me, I thought it is worldwide practice to write opening times at the entrance of your establishment – so I did, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to work with CitiBank MD’s.) He rudely starts demanding his dessert, my manager still tries to keep it cool and explain to him that there’s no one to make it, at which point Mr. Carasso says: “You’re not a swahili, make a plan.” He managed to insult my manager and most East African nations in one short sentence. Well done you! Later on, my husband David, the owner, went to their table to sort out the credit card payment. He asks if everything was ok, and Mr Carasso Jr. started again with the same inane comments, with the same rude attitude. He even said he should pay less, because the manager was rude to him and refused to serve him dessert. He finally made David tell him “we don’t need people like you in our business.” At which both Junior and his wife said: “Really?” and whipped out their phones. They then both proceeded to abuse our restaurant on all the Facebook pages known to them. (Shooters Grill Page, Expat in Dar, and their personal pages) I am sure that they were most surprised when it backfired and almost everyone took our side. So much so, that after a few hours of very heated comments against them, they took all the posts down. I am very grateful to all our loyal customers who supported us. But I also think it is not right to try to denigrate a business just because you are a brat who could not get his sweet, and when that turns sour, you just wipe it all under the carpet. I think someone should teach you responsibility and some manners, Mr MD of Citi Bank Tanzania. And last but not least, respect other people. Be they Swahili or not.
