Some recent comments at our booth at the Burl farmers - TopicsExpress

Some recent comments at our booth at the Burl farmers mkt......please note weve been there for 22 YRS and so some of this is hard to swallow-and weve changed our focus many times over the years! From being first veggie vendors to bring plant starts in spring (with an organic greenhouse), first vendors to bring heirloom tomatoes, first vendors to bring culinary herbs in bunches....and then first vendors to bring cheese....weve sold grassfed finished organic beef, pasture raised pork, organic eggs....and now we have to listen to this each week. Oh more cheese. Oh too bad. There were a bunch of vendors down there so I bought some already. But yours was good! (After they tasted 4 samples for free not even intending to buy) Oh God, another cheese?! (I am not kidding on this one) Wheres all the food at this fair? Is it all together or are they mixed in with the crafts? Oh more cheese! Ha! I am SO full already from eating all the samples here. Where is your cheese sold locally? I can buy some there. Im only here to EAT lunch right now. That was not really what we wanted to listen to all day after preparing all day on July 4th to come to market with our products. No time to hang with any family or the proverbial barbecue....It is a huge amount of work with milking and making cheese, cutting, wrapping, aging cheese etc. Its apparent though, and many agree, there is only a certain pool of money that will support this number of cheese vendors in a town that is not a larger city. The question becomes, is it a food fair or farmers market? Some of us farmers rely on this as a part of our revenue. Not just to get more marketing or test cheese on the public....Many of our regulars, chefs included, no longer come because theyve told us its food centric and conducive to the impulsive morning or lunchbite-not shopping for localvore grown eats anymore. I recently was made aware of an article written about this very subject-I need to go in search of....just speaking the truth, here. Finally. Because we hear these sorts of comments each week. Thought you might like to know.
