Some say CA Gilberts Erector Sets were inspired in part by a British toy called Meccano. M. P. Goulds 1904 biography, Frank Hornby: The Boy Who Made $1,000,000 With a Toy, tells the story of Meccanos inventor, Frank Hornby. Others say A C Gilbert was inspired by watching railroad electrification construction. The evidence supports the first theory in my opinion as there is hard evidence A C was in England on an extended vacation at the time the first sets were out, this is not entirely a popular view here but if you read the whitepaper on the demise of the company it makes a lot of sense.
