Some time ago, I seem to recall someone asking about Pr Walter Ferris first wife, nee Chrissie Lowe. I thought Id post the 2 articles from the Australasian Record from 1955, when she died. The first follows, the second Ill add in a comment under it, so as to keep them together: The Late Sister Walter Ferris A BRIEF LIFE SKETCH Christina Lowe was born July 28, 1904, at Ayr, North. Queensland, and fell asleep in Jesus at Wahroonga on January 26, 1955, being just over fifty years of age. While the Lowe family were living on the Atherton Tablelands of Queensland they learned the truth as published by Seventh-day Adventists through the reading of the Bible, the children being instructed by their devout parents. Chrissie entered the Australasian Missionary College in her middle teens and was graduated from the Business Course. Part of her college life was spent in the office of the Sanitarium Health Food factory near by. This helped qualify her for her post-graduation position in the head office of the company at Wahroonga, where she worked with Brother George Chapman, who was then secretary of the Health Food Department of the Union Conference. In the year 1930 she was married to Brother Walter G. Ferris, and together they sold literature in the Victorian Conference, until about a year later, when they were called to connect with the Fiji Mission. The intervening twenty-three years until her untimely death were fully and faithfully devoted to the work of the mission in the Central Pacific, five years of that time being in Tonga, where her husband served as superintendent of the mission. Both of these workers endeared themselves to the Queen and people of that island kingdom. After returning to Fiji, this family again took up their work in the Vanua Levu and Lou area, which required much time and travel on the sea. When not accompanying her husband, Sister Ferris spent many weeks and months keeping a faithful vigil on the home station at Buca Bay while her husband encountered the perils of the sea. When the Fiji Mission was divided into two separate missions a few years ago, and Pastor W. G. Ferris was appointed both president and secretary-treasurer, the latter office was assumed and efficiently filled by his devoted companion, who now rests from her labour of love. One surviving child, Elwyn, is now eighteen years of age. He spent the vacation with his parents in Australia after attending the New Zealand Missionary College. Elwyn has had the faithful and constant care of a very devoted mother and is indebted to her for much of his primary education. We can imagine the expressions of grief among the hundreds of believers in the Central Pacific as the news of the passing of this leaders wife is made known. Isa, isa, sa vakacequ mona marama ni nodu i talatala! How sad, how sad is the falling to rest of our leaders wife! The ship Viking Ahoy will no doubt enter her next port with the flag half mast, and memorial services will be held in honour of the passing of this mother in Israel. We join with the four surviving brothers and one sister, Alice, as nearest of kin, and many relatives and. friends in this hour of sorrow. Our hearts, however, are fortified with, the assurances of the Word of God. The partriarch Job, in the hour of his affliction, could say, The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. The funeral service was held in the Avondale church, in the presence of a large group of relatives and friends. Our late sister was laid to rest in Gods own acre, a little distance from the entrance to the college. Brother G. F. Bohringer had charge of interment arrangements. Assisting ministers were Pastors A. H. Forbes, C. S. Palmer, D. Sibley, and W. G. Turner. A. G. Stewart. (Australasian Record, 28 Feb 1955, p6-7)
