Some tough talk here. After all the years and all the kids Ive seen, in the parishes weve served, it seems to me that there are some things a parent just cant prevent, no matter how hard she or he tries. Theres something *inside the kid* that disposes them to wish desperately to be seen as cool, regardless of anything the parent says or does; or some other thing that disposes them to have a sense of groundedness within themselves, a clarity about their own values and beliefs, that makes peer pressure roll off like rainwater. All of which to say, parents have a lot of power, but that power still has a limit. The child still has free will. All you can do is what you can do, and keep on praying.
