Some weeks ago I did a sort of time travel of the Square, Wolverton well here is another one this time Green Lane, Wolverton. My time travel takes me back to 1952. I was only a baby, my grandparents had just moved from the big house you can see in Ledsam Street, to the house next door (number 97), a two up two down. My mum and dad moved into the house next door to that, where we lived for just a short time. Time is moving forward now and I am about six years old and I am playing in Green lane with my friends Alan Alman and Chris Fildes, Dr Peters Fildes son. We are now playing in the stables on the right, (the building with the ivy growing up the wall) part of the Elms and doctors surgery. We are in the loft, I can see all sorts of things stored up there, clothes old 78 records, various ornaments an Aladins cave really (probably worth a fortune now!). We are playing with all these things making a ghost train (without the train). The doctor, his housekeeper and gardener are coming to look around so we must make it as scary as possible. In our young lives we have spent many happy hours playing in that loft. Now we have successfully scared the three of them, and charged the a couple of pennies for the privilege, we have now decided to go back into Green Lane and climb over the wall (on the left in the picture) into the orchards, well not the wall it was easier to climb over the gate! We are now scrumping apples and keeping a lookout for the local policeman. We climb back over the gate and back into Green Lane where we are passing some the apples to other children walking past, I remember one person we would see quite a lot his name was Colin Geary he is older than us and he would play with some of the other children, he is not there now though. Time is moving on to around 1964 and I am walking down Green Lane into Moon Street to go to school, I am in Miss Brown’s class. Whoops here we go again moving on and I am much older and my gran and granddad have now been moved to an OAPs bungalow in Furze Way. The Little Streets are coming down and being replaced by some new buildings. The wall and Orchard have also gone replaced by some bungalows. The Gables house and grounds have been replaced by a block of flats some houses and an OAPs home called the Orchard (I wonder if it was named after the old orchard!) Green Lane looks much different now, it is around 1980 and I am a young policeman walking the beat and just passing the Elms, where my friend Chris use to live. As I walk past I wonder what the garden at the back looks like. I remember it as being very big with a tennis court. I would love to have a look at it again. Hang on! I can the house is empty and I am a policeman, I think I should do a security check of the building and grounds! I walk round the back to find everything is smaller than I remember it. The court yard at the back of the stables, the garden and the tennis courts are still there but in need of some maintenance – my memories come flooding back of my days playing as a kid there. Whoosh again moving forward in time the stables are coming down and being replaced by two houses. The Elms have also been split into two and there are cars parked on both sides of the road – nothing like my childhood memories of Green Lane!
