Some well needed sanity showing up in Californias Surf City. The state-wide ban on plastic bags signed by Governor Brown is on hold after over 800,000 registered voters signatures were collected to put a measure on the 2016 ballot to repeal that ban. The rest of us out here in Cali where bans are in place will have to see how all this plays out. The key factor in Huntington Beach reversing its ban? “The intention of the bag ban was to reduce litter and improve the environment. We have no verifiable proof that our local bag ban has done anything to reduce locally sourced and discarded single-use plastic bags. Littering of any kind is unacceptable, but we already have laws in place to address littering.” In other words, it hasnt made any difference, just caused a lot of inconvenience. Anyone who has stood in a grocery check out line and seen the checkers struggle to get the items in the tortured collection of reusable bags, slowing up the already long lines of shoppers, knows that it was easier and faster for everyone when a bagging system was in place using the store bags. And, being forced to pay an additional 10 cents per for the lousy paper bags that meet the ordinances requirements, when the store used to give them to you with their cost built into their pricing structure, really rubs the wrong way as it was implemented only to change behavior. That e-coli and salmonella are commonly found in the cloth bags we all use is never addressed by these plastic-ban proponents. Kudos to Surf City... may they be starting another trend.
