Some what of a long read...but well worth it. Former major leaguer Don Baylor once said “in baseball you can’t let failure carry over to the next day. You have to flip the page.” Encouragement from others often plays a major role in our efforts to keep moving forward. A young minor leaguer experienced this as he struggled through a difficult first season. As the son of a former major leaguer, he possessed all the tools to be a great athlete, but his potential was not being reached. He expected to be released at any time. The turning point came during an afternoon game. Before his second at bat, the opposing catcher called time out and went to the pitcher’s mound for a conference. While they were busy, the umpire, standing behind the plate, spoke calmly to the young man. After play resumed, the very next pitch was crushed for a home run. From then on he played with a new confidence and eventually was called up to the major leagues. When asked later what caused the turn-a-round, the young player gave credit to the umpire. He told me, “You look just like your dad in the batter’s box. You hold the bat just like he did. I can see his genes in you.” As we go through life we too will encounter problems, conflicts and troubles of all kinds. God’s Word contains many valuable lessons. Scripture teaches us be strong and to hang on. It provides comfort in our most desperate hour. Trouble can come at us in waves, but instead of sinking under those waves, we have the hope that the Lord will see us through. That hope allows us to “flip the page” and eagerly anticipate what God has in store for us tomorrow. 1. Has someone’s encouragement ever made a major impact on your life? 2. What kind of encourager are you? 3. Do you spend regular time in God’s Word letting Him encourage you?
